Why we selected dexters

In a search for alternatives to our commercial beef, we looked at every breed we could find. We kept coming back to Dexters. Their size, temperament, milk, pulling, beef quality, hardiness and foraging abilities make them a perfect all-purpose breed. After getting them we were not disappointed, they are wonderful animals to be around and raise. We don't think a day has gone by that they have not brought a smile to our faces and hearts. Maintaining Dexters has proven to be much less expensive than the large commercial breeds.
In recent years, there has been a worldwide surge of interest in Dexter cattle. Dexters meet many requirements. Because of their size and number, they appeal to the miniature/novelty and rare gene protection enthusiasts. Because of their production, Dexters are the perfect old-fashioned family cow. Pound for pound, Dexters cost less to get to the table, economically turning forage into rich milk and quality, lean meat. No other bovine can satisfy such a diverse market.
Hardy:
Dexters are found doing well from Alaska to Florida.
Thrifty:
On the whole you can expect to feed your Dexter half what you would feed one of the larger breeds under the same conditions.
Productive:
Dexter cows produce about 1 1/2 to 2 gallons of 4% butterfat milk daily when fed for production. The bulls will reach 250 pounds lean carcass weight in a year.
Easy Calving:
Dexters are known for their ease of calving. The use of calf-pullers is virtually unknown.
Small:
Between three and four feet high, the pony-sized Dexters are easier to care for.
Personable:
When handled properly, most Dexters are more like a member of the family.
